Ophthalmology Evening Exam
The ophthalmology team came by for their evening check and the visit was one of the most encouraging yet. These exams have become noticeably easier for Chase as his recovery progresses.
Vision: Chase’s left eye remains swollen completely shut. Each exam requires the lid to be manually forced open, either with fingers or medical instruments, in order to conduct testing. The eye also has lubricant applied which further limits the clarity of vision tests. Given these constraints the team was pleased with what they were able to assess.
Eye Pressure — Holding Steady at 18: Eye pressure has been holding at 18 for the last several days, well within the normal range of 21 and under. To put that in perspective, when Chase was first taken to the operating room last Friday, his eye pressure was in the 50s.
Eye Movement — A Significant Milestone: This was the headline finding of the evening exam. Chase’s eye is now moving fully in all directions, including all the way to the left, which had previously been restricted. The team explained that the pressure behind the eye had been physically preventing full movement. As the swelling has decreased the eye has naturally returned to its full range of motion. The team described this as really good news.
The team will return in the morning.
