Pediatric and Hospitalist Morning Rounds
A noticeably brighter and more upbeat visit than previous mornings. The team walked in and immediately remarked that Chase looks better today.
Chase’s Status: Chase reported his pain is good. His left eye — the one that has been the central focus all week — is opening more than before. The team noted continued swelling along the side of his face but explained this is expected and largely positional following the drain removal. As Chase sits up more and moves around, fluid will naturally redistribute. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
The headline number of the day — CRP: Chase’s inflammatory marker CRP has dropped to 10. To put that in perspective — it was in the hundreds when he was admitted last week. The team was visibly pleased. This is a powerful indicator that the infection is being effectively treated and the body is responding beautifully.
Eating and Drinking: Chase is cleared to eat and drink. IV fluids are being discontinued — since he is eating and drinking normally his kidneys can do their job without the additional fluid support. IV antibiotics will continue. The team also confirmed his kidneys are handling the antibiotic regimen well despite vancomycin — one of the stronger antibiotics he is on — being known to occasionally stress kidney function.
ENT and Ophthalmology: Both teams have been by this morning. Ophthalmology gave the all clear on eating. ENT has not yet formally communicated their update but the hospitalist noted — if they were worried about anything they would have said so. All indications are that both teams remain satisfied with Chase’s progress.
Infectious Disease Plan: The hospitalist confirmed a conversation with the infectious disease team is upcoming to determine the full antibiotic course going forward — specifically the PICC line versus oral antibiotic decision that has been the central open question. That discussion should bring more clarity on discharge timing.
Getting Outside: Chase got outside for a walk yesterday and the team enthusiastically encouraged more of the same today. Spring has arrived in Boston and fresh air and movement continue to be considered genuinely therapeutic.
A Well Earned Reward: The team suggested Chase deserves ice cream today — specifically recommending a local spot called Scoop and Scootery. After the week he has had nobody in the room disagreed.
