Going Home Today!

The infectious disease and pediatric teams both came by to walk Chase and the family through the plan for discharge!

The Antibiotic Regimen: Chase will be going home on two oral antibiotics taken twice daily — one in the morning and one at night for each medication, ideally taken after meals to minimize nausea. The planned course is approximately three weeks, though the attending noted Chase may not need the full duration depending on how he responds.

Blood Work Monitoring: One of the antibiotics carries a risk of affecting bone marrow function with prolonged use — potentially causing white blood cell and platelet counts to decrease. Chase will not feel or notice this happening, which is precisely why regular blood work is essential. Labs will be done every week to ten days and will be sent directly to the attending for review.

Follow Up: The attending will see Chase virtually in approximately two weeks — no need to come in person unless circumstances require it. If the ophthalmology team does have an in-person appointment around the same time the attending will coordinate to be there or see Chase on the same day. The ENT attending that did the surgery will also be seeing Chase in-person. No shortage of follow-ups.

First Dose in Hospital: Chase will receive his first dose of the oral antibiotics here in the hospital — both to confirm he can swallow them and to monitor for any immediate allergic reaction within the first 30 to 60 minutes. If he tolerates them well he is cleared to go home, sometime “after lunch”.
